This is a beautiful piece of Crewel Work. Crewel work is a centuries-old surface embroidery technique that uses thick wool yarn to create textured and raised patterns on linen or cotton fabric. The word “crewel” comes from an old Welsh word for wool. To turn this piece into a quilt we backed the embroidered piece with a neutral and coordinating gingham fabric. The sleeves are 2" longer than our standard Helen pattern, allowing you to cuff the sleeves to show this fabric off. There is no loft, it is thin but has a little weight due to the amount of handwork. This piece is comfortable to wear, however, if you have any wool sensitivity please do not participate. Please note that all of our jackets are made from antique quilts and the fabric reflects this. Our fabrics are sometimes older than 100 years old and are perfectly worn. We believe this is what makes them special and is part of their charm. All of our garments are pre-washed in a special restoration quilt wash. We recommend only spot cleaning if necessary.
