This is a hand embroidered Otomi from San Miguel, Mexico. These handmade Otomis are becoming harder and harder to find because younger generations are not continuing the traditions of their ancestors. Otomi embroidery is a Mexican style of hand embroidery. The Otomi textiles, also known as tenangos, take weeks or even years for the women to embroider. They are said to be based off of cliff paintings in the Tepehua-Otomi mountains in the area. Some say that they may be also inspired by cave paintings in the Mexican Plateau area. The embroidery is done on ivory cotton. To make this Otomi into a quilt we added blue polka dot fabric for the backing(inside of jacket). We recommend cuffing the sleeves to show off this fun fabric. In our opinion, the jacket is very very thin and lightweight with no loft or batting. Please note, there may be minor color bleed throughout. This is absolutely a Lady Lancaster 10/10. It is very flattering and comfortable to wear with a great drape. We made this jacket completely reversible with pockets on both sides. Please Note: due to the hand embroidered art these textiles can snag more easily than quilts and should be worn more carefully. We consider this a show horse and not a work horse so we highly recommend the new owner of this piece handle with care.
