This is a very very special, museum worthy piece of Nebraska Amish Decorative Arts History. It is an Amish Crown of Thorns Quilt. It is beautifully hand quilted and hand sewn. This quilt was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Widmer circa 1920's. The Widmers were Swiss and lived in Zurich. They were art collectors with an emphasis in quilt collecting. This specific piece was labeled # 67 in their quilt collection. We saved this quilts number and had it sewn into the inside for the jacket. Sadly, Mr. Widmer recently passed, his collection was sold in April or May of 2024. Lady Lancaster had an emotional connection when she saw this specific piece. Aside from Gees Bend Quilts, these old Amish Quilts are becoming exceedingly rare and ought to be revered. In our opinion, the quilt is thin, soft, very flattering and has a great drape. This is not a quilt jacket for everyday use, this is an artistic piece that should be babied and preserved for the historical and artistic significance it holds. While the fabrics are in good condition for their age, black fabrics from this era are notorious for weakening over time. Please take caution. Please note that all of our jackets are made from antique quilts and the fabric reflects this. Our fabrics are sometimes older than 100 years old and are perfectly worn. We believe this is what makes them special and is part of their charm. All of our garments are pre-washed in a special restoration quilt wash. We recommend only spot cleaning if necessary.
