It is a traditional Crazy Quilt or Scrap Quilt. These quilts were historically opportunities for the quilt makers to show off their hand embroidery repertoire. This quilt is no different, it contains immense amounts of hand embroidery. We counted over 12 different kinds of stitches in rainbow colored thread. This quilt contains silks, flannels, polys and some fine wool from men’s suiting. If you have skin sensitivity you should not purchase this jacket due to the assortment of fabrics. We love the contrasting burnt orange floral fabric on the inside of the jacket. This jacket contains patches that have been frayed over time, while the integrity of the jacket fabric is intact, please note the fraying throughout. We have added many photos at the end of this listing that illustrate this and the jacket is priced accordingly. This piece is the absolute keystone of this collection and a feather in our cap. It is a very special and original Ruby McKim quilt design(many have reproduced similar patterns but it is important to note this is the very original Ruby McKim picket fence as she attended). It is an absolute handwork show-off and an ode to a 1920's era embroidered picket fence flower garden. Ruby McKim was a true renaissance woman, way ahead of her time. She is nationally known as the premiere quilt designer of the 20's and 30's. She was a fine artist who expressed her talent in many mediums, as well as a sharp business woman. She had a tremendous impact on the decorative arts of her era. Ruby's family dedicated a website to her in hopes that they would bring her life's work back to life. They state that they do not want her quilts backed away in dusty boxes in the attic and that they seek to light up her legacy and share the talent of her life with those who would appreciate it. Lady Lancaster would like to believe that this jacket will serve as a walking monument to Ruby's immense contributions. In addition we know this piece was made in Holton, Indiana because the maker signed her work and embroidered her complete address. We have preserved the makers note and it can be found on the inside of the lapel. Please see photos in listing for more details. An additional item to note on this masterpiece is that the maker used an almond colored ground fabric which sets this piece apart. Most makers of this pattern throughout history have used an ivory or white. In our opinion this quilt is thin, soft, light weight, and has a buttery drape. Please note that while this piece is in excellent condition for its age there are a few gaps in the embroidery and if you look close in some of the photos you will see this. Please note the contrasting plaid fabric on the back of the quilt(inside of jacket). In our opinion the quilt is very soft, very thin, with an excellent drape. It is very flattering on the body. Because of the excessive amount of fabric included on this quilt it is heavier.  However, in the quilt world, it would not be considered a heavy quilt. It's very rare that an applique from this time period survives the test of time in this way. We found a tiny heart mend from the original owner. It is placed on the sleeve and we have included a photo at the end of the listing. In our opinion this quilt is very thin, very light weight, and extremely comfortable to wear. There is some visible fabric thinning on the center's of the flowers.  It is not fabric breakage but it is definitely thinning. This is a piece that we suggest handling with kid gloves. This is an artistic piece for your closet and should not be bought by someone who is looking for a quilt jacket to throw on the daily. We assigned a charming story book tag from a children's cloth book circa 1920. Despite its patina, she could not walk away without it. The quilt is a true rescue! We cut around the worst spots, but there is still some wear on parts of the applique.  Applique quilts generally do not stand the test of time in the way traditional quilt blocks do.  As a result, the quilt has wear on the applique's throughout.  It is priced accordingly.  This Helen jacket should not be used as a wardrobe staple.  It should be viewed as wearable art and a remnant of American Quilt History.  In our opinion, the quilt is extremely soft, very thin, very lightweight, with little to no loft (puffiness). In our opinion this is piece is super soft, is lightweight with medium loft (puffiness), and has a good drape. This piece is NOT hand quilted, our good friend Zoe Dawn quilted these two orphan quilt tops together. Please note: There are a few spots of color bleed and a few zig zag mends that blend into the fabric.
